I'm sure there are many members who have RA in their hips. Could you tell where you feel the most pain, is it sitting, walking, sleeping and standing ? Iv'e been having a great deal of hip pain and wonderd if it's the RA or just more old age problems.

Hi Glenys,

Just logged in and saw your post. With my right hip, the pain was mainly in my groin, which my current physio tells me is most common (she has worked in the Rheumatology Dept in Leeds). That's now been replaced (twice!). However, with my left hip I'm feeling the pain in my glute, as if its triggering my sciatic nerve. The physio said it can do that but its not so common.

Getting in and out of the car causes me the most pain, but the pain is there virtually constantly. Not for much longer though, its coming out soon!

If you're concerned, maybe ask for a pelvic x-ray, put your mind at rest?

Hi,

As Carol says, I have my hip pain mainly in my groin and boy, does it hurt!

I also find it shoots down the inside leg. Any position was terrible, standing was probably the best but only if all my weight was on my other leg or the crutch.

I found sitting down horrendous and the same for lying down. Oddly the only way I could possibly sleep was on my tummy!

Really hope you find some relief and the pelvic x ray is a very good idea.

Love,

Amanda

For a few months now I've had an uncomfortable ache in my left hip. It's varies between the outside of the hip and the centre of my left buttock. It's almost like a nerve has been affected. I'm going to get an xray done and see what's going on. Talking to Carol has made me paranoid!Smile

Hi Glenys

Lots of things can cause hip pain as you know.

Before my replacement, I noticed the pain all the time but it seemed worse when I was lying down for some reason. It was in the groin mainly, but spread to the small of my back and down my leg, through the glut. As Carol said, getting into and out of the car was a bit of a performance!

Hope things ease off for you soon.

How are you feeling now after the bi-pass? Hope you are feeling much more like yuour old self now and almost ready to join the Olympics gang again - we've missed you!!

Lots of love

Dear Glenys,
I experienced bouts of pain in my right hip several years ago.
It used to hurt sitting down and walking upstairs.
I eventually asked my Rheumatologist for an X ray to be done
and it was normal. Which was a relief as my Mum has had two hip
replacements!
I do not suffer with hip pain now and I suppose mine was just of
unknown origin!
Best wishes,
FionaSmile

Thank you all for your useful replies. I have an appointment with the Rheumy March 16th and I was wondering whether to mention it to him. It has been painful since August and I thought it was conected with my circulation problems but it hasn't improved now that that has been sorted. It is most painful when I sit, bend forward or move my leg out to the side. I think after reading your replies its possibly muscular. I don't think that I'm up to pole dancing standard yet Jean. Ijust feel under the weather which is nothing. I was glad to read that you are having a good spell, long may it last. My thanks and good wishes to everyone. Glenys. x

Hi Glenys
Like Amanda I have experienced terrible pin in my hip due to RA. The most recent episode resulted in an injection directly into the hip. The pain tends to concentrate in my groin. Lying, standing, sitting all impossible!!! ended up sleeping in this weird, half sitting up, twisted round, pillow between my legs position.....so ultimately not comfy for long or very attractive for that matterLOL

Hi Amanda
Over the past week my hip has started to improve, taken a while though, it's been five weeks since the injection. If I do too much, it definately lets me know!
thankyou for asking.
How are you? Are you still having problems with your hip?

Hi Claire,

When I first had the injection I was deflated as after two weeks there was only a little change and I presumed that was that. But slowly it kept improving untilo by week6 there was no pain at all! It has been immensely successful, I am sure because it was administered via ultra sound..and has really kept the pain at bay.

I know it is a matter of time until the rheumatoid fluid builds up or the actual erosion begins causing problems but until then, I'm okay!

Much love,

Amanda

Hello all, I had my Rheumy appointment yesterday. I told him the symtoms of the pain and where it is and when it's worse, he examined my movement of both hips and the left one is stiff so I've had an xray to see if any thing is happening in there. My next appointment is in June. The thing is since he moved the joint about it's even worse. Never mind I'll keep taking the tablets. Glenys.x

Hi Glenys, I can sympathise, pain in my hips was how I first new I had RA. I am pleased they have taken an xray but do you have to wait until your appointment in June to find out the results or can you get details before?

Oh heck, Glenys - the rheummies muck about with our joints but don't seem to realise how much pain it can cause. Hope the hip settles down soon and hopefully, you will be able to see what is going on from the x-rays. Have you asked about an ultra-sound guided steroid jab in there?

Dear Stewart,

Hope you see this!

But I just wanted to say that my hip pain felt exactly how you described yours, like a trapped nerve, and for ages and ages this was what I thought it was. It was quite distinct to usual RA pain, if you see what I mean.

It did ache and hurt like hell, but also felt like a trapped nerve as sometimes any pressure at all would make it go into unbelievable spasms...

Hello all, I hope that if anything serious shows on the xray that someone would contact me and the Rheumy team are very good and will see me sooner if it becomes unbearable. It's good to get these things checked out. Thankyou all for your concerns. Take care. Glenys x
